The Lonely Traveler in the Void: the Great Mathematician Alexander Grothendieck
Abstract: The French mathematician Alexander Grothendieck is unanimously regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians in the 20 th century. He was born in a humble family, and relied on self-study to make the tremendous contribution in the field of Functional Analysis and Algebraic Geometry. Since 40 years old Grothendieck started to conduct the anti-war activities, gradually gave up his study and finally got isolated from academic community. This paper is intended to reveal the correlation between sciences and society by introducing the life, mathematical achievements and influence of Grothendieck.

The Great and Mysterious Mathematician Grigory Perelman
Abstract: The Russian mathematician Grigory Perelman is unanimously regarded as one of the greatest contemporary mathematicians. He was born in a Russian Jewish family, worked in the Russian and American institutes, and became isolated from the mainstream academia after 1995. Perelman did his independent research under very harsh conditions, and spent 8 years before solving the Poincaré conjecture.
