Abstract

The Russian mathematician Grigory Perelman is unanimously regarded as one of the greatest contemporary mathematicians. He was born in a Russian Jewish family, worked in the Russian and American institutes, and became isolated from the mainstream academia after 1995. Perelman did his independent research under very harsh conditions, and spent 8 years before solving the Poincaré conjecture. Afterwards, Perelman rejected the Fields Medal and Millennium Prize, and ultimately quit academia. This paper is intended to reveal the complicated correlation between academic mechanism, society and scientists by introducing the unique life of Perelman.
