Temporal Relations Between Celestial Phenomena and Their Portending Human Affairs in the Astronomical Chapter of the Jin Shu
Abstract: Ancient Chinese astrology was mainly “judicial” portent astrology that focused on the relations between celestial phenomena and human affairs. The astronomical chapters of the official histories of the past dynasties contain records of a large amount of celestial phenomena and their portending human affairs. These records constituted the “empirical evidence” for astrology. In this article we make a case study based on the Astronomical Chapter of the History of the Jin. We investigate how the celestial phenomena were made associated with the human affair, or, to put in another way, how human affairs were rendered “portended events”. We focus on the temporal relations between the celestial phenomena and their portending human affairs. Our analysis of more than 500 hundreds reveals interesting characteristics in the temporal relations between the two. Various factors are considered to explain these characters, providing a deeper understanding of ancient Chinese astrology.

Creations of the Human Mind: Richard Dedekind's Mathematical Thought
Abstract: Richard Dedekind stressed the importance of concepts and methods. He thought that numbers were free creations of the human mind. He put forward many new concepts and theorems, especially the idea of defining the irrational number with the cut of rational number, thus getting the basis of natural numbers, ideal theory and other new concepts of abstract algebra. All these eventually laid a solid foundation for modern mathematics. He also had close academic contact with many mathematicians and played an indispensable role in the mathematical community. Based on the materials about Richard Dedekind, we analyzed his achievements, influences and mathematical community.

Is Philosophy Dead? Stephen Hawking’s Philosophical Thoughts
Abstract: Stephen Hawking claimed in Grand Design that “philosophy is dead”, and what does “philosophy is dead” mean anyway? By examining Hawking’s philosophical thoughts, this paper points out that Hawking took the “scientific determinism” which holds that nature is governed by natural laws as the basic principle, and tried to answer such questions as ontology, causality and the nature of the universe within the framework of science. However, Hawking’s “solutions” were not successful, and philosophy is actually not dead. On the other hand, it is a meaningful and inspiring attempt that Hawking had provided a new solution possible in trying to explore the fundamental problems of philosophy based on the latest advances in physical science.
