Abstract

There have been some debates on the relation of AI to self-consciousness among Chinese philosophical academics. I will argue in the paper that the focus of these debates is not whether AI has selfconsciousness, but how to distinguish them from each other. At first, we need to clarify the distinction between consciousness and intelligence conceptually in order to make sure what differences lie between scientists and philosophers in their discussions on consciousness and self-consciousness. Secondly, due to the failure of the strategy of semantic ascent in the analytic tradition, we must adopt the approach of semantic descent in our discussion of the relation of AI to self-consciousness. Finally, only when we understand the distinction between AI and self-consciousness can we know really what we are talking about on that relation.
