The Matilda Effect and Gender Inequality: Based on the Survey of the Social Stratification in Chinese S&T Professionals
Abstract: With the data obtained in the survey of the social stratification in Chinese S&T professionals, this paper examines gender differences in science, and further discusses the functional mechanism, Matthew effect and Matilda effect, which resulted in gender inequalities from the perspectives of institutional sociology of science and feminist sociology of science. The results show that women scientists occupy far less of hierarchical status than men scientists in China. It is the important mechanism of Matilda effect, other than Matthew effect, which can well explain the gender difference and inequality in Chinese science.
